Barcelona With Kids

Posted on January 19, 2023February 2, 2023by Paola & Joe

The last time I was in Barcelona was when I was 6 months pregnant with my first kid. Needless to say, I was thrilled when we decided to spend Christmas in Barcelona with the kids over our 2022 winter break trip to Europe! Barcelona is such a fun and lively city! I love how art […]

Welcome!

We are a multicultural family of 4 who loves traveling. Before kids, we took any opportunity we had to travel the world, spending between a month and three months backpacking through countries in South East Asia and Europe. In 2018 our family took off on a year-long trip and visited over 20 countries in 5 continents. It was an amazing experience! We first started this blog to share our travels with our friends and families but, since beginning our journey, we’ve received a lot of questions from friends about traveling with our kids, so we decided it might be useful if we also share our experiences, tips, and tricks! 10 months since we arrived in Portugal and loving 10 months since we arrived in Portugal and loving every second of it! My only regret is that we didn’t do it sooner!

📸 of our family cheering on Portugal at a UEFA Nations League game against Denmark last April. Yes, Portugal won! 🇵🇹
Perimeter Trail (Blue Trail) in Parque Florestal d Perimeter Trail (Blue Trail) in Parque Florestal de Monsanto in Lisbon. This 7.5km (4.5-mile) loop takes you past old ventilation towers for the aqueduct, the start of the aqueduct arches, cypress forest, a garden of wooden sculptures, a warming hut and so much more! It was especially pretty with all the wildflowers in bloom! A beautiful escape to nature right in Lisbon!

The Roman Galleries of Lisbon are a hidden treasur The Roman Galleries of Lisbon are a hidden treasure of this city! The galleries can only be accessed twice a year on guided tours, and tickets sell out within minutes so imagine how excited I was when I managed to get tickets to visit last April!

The galleries, which date back to the 1st century AD were discovered in the 18th century, shortly after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. When they are closed, the water level can reach more than a meter high! The city pumps the water during the days the galleries are open so that people can walk around (waterproof shoes are a must to visit!). Tours are given by Museu de Lisboa staff and last about 45 minutes. All tours are in Portuguese.

1-2 Wandering around Graca during a cold evening.
3-4 Hiking the perimeter trail in Monsanto Park.
5 Completed a 1,000 piece puzzle in record time!
6-7 Went back to Estufa Fria with the kids during break.
8-10 Celebrated our first 25 de Abril in Lisbon!
11 Found a super cool used bookstore in our neighborhood!
12 Visited RainLight at Amoreiras Shopping Center (I’ll share more about this later!).
13 Spent some hot days at the beach soaking up the sun and all the fun!

There was a lot more in between, but these are the highlights! Can’t believe today is the last day of April!

Boulders Beach and the African Penguins! This was Boulders Beach and the African Penguins! This was the first thing I knew I wanted to do while in Cape Town! We had a great time watching the penguins, and then spent the rest of the morning hanging out at Middle Beach. On the way back we stopped for lunch at a brewery in Simon’s Town and accidentally ordered a very large beer 😂

As a plant and nature lover, I had to visit @kirst As a plant and nature lover, I had to visit @kirstenbosch_nbg while in Cape Town! The gardens didn’t disappoint, and the views of the back of Table Mountain were phenomenal! We loved doing the boomslang canopy walk and getting a different perspective of the gardens!

Cape Town. Walking around the V&A Waterfront, wat Cape Town. Walking around the V&A Waterfront, watching street performers, and enjoying the views. We also visited the @zeitzmocaa and really enjoyed it! The museum building is art in itself, and the installations were very thought-provoking. We really loved the “Understudies” exhibit by Nolan Oswald Dennis, which “offer a counter system for thinking about global, celestial and universal relations.” Turns out, even our night sky has been colonized 🤷🏻‍♀️
Mossel Bay: our last stop along the Garden Route b Mossel Bay: our last stop along the Garden Route before heading to Cape Town. We visited the Maritime Museum and sent a letter from the Post Office Tree, which is a South Africa’s oldest mailbox, dating back to 1501! Read about the interesting story on the last photo. We also saw a cool replica of the vessel used by Bartholomeu Dias to round the southern tip of Africa back in 1488. He was the first European to do so, and he was Portuguese.

Oudtshoorn, Ostrich Capital of the World! This tow Oudtshoorn, Ostrich Capital of the World! This town’s ostrich industry goes back to Victorian times, and today they continue to farm ostriches for their meat and their feathers. This is also a good place to stay if you are looking at exploring the amazing Cango Caves. This is what we did in the time we were there:

🍖 Ate dinner at Nostalgie, a family-run eatery that serves ostrich in many different ways. I had the ostrich steak and it tasted like filet mignon. It was such a surprise!
🦇 Explored the 20-million year old Cango Caves. We did the heritage tour, but you can also chose to do the Adventure tour and get really deep into the caves.
🐦 Visited the @highgateostrichfarm and learned a lot about these cool (but not very smart) birds!
🪴 Got a delicious lunch at @eight_bells_mountain_inn on our way to Mossel Bay from Oudtshoorn. This Inn has the most beautiful garden courtyard with a lovely playground space for children. This would be a lovely place to spend a night or two.

Oudtshoorn was a super fun stop on the Garden Route, and a great opportunity to see the Karoo region of South Africa.
