We visited Lisbon back in 2010 as a last minute decision. Joe and I had been walking the Camino de Santiago for 10 days, and were forced to stop when I got sick. That left us with over 2 weeks free before returning home. It was then that we decided to hop on a bus and head over to Portugal. We spent the first week in Porto, followed by another week in Lisbon. Here are ten images from our time Lisbon. These are my travel photos. They are not carefully composed, but more spontaneous, and I love that!
Back when we visited, Lisbon wasn’t the tourist hotspot it is today. There were hardly any tour groups or crowds wandering around the city! This was during the time when the austerity measures where happening in the country. There were a handful of street protests during our week there and it was very interesting to see.
We stayed in the Alfama District by the Sé, and loved having our elderly neighbors giggle every time we left the building. We became friends with the man who made our espresso every morning at a little restaurant down the alley from our place, and managed to learn our way around this maze of a neighborhood.
With its hills, trams and liveliness, Lisbon reminded us so much of San Francisco. We even thought about moving there at some point because we just loved it so much! Maybe we’ll do it one day, but in the meantime we are hoping to visit again soon to show our kids this charming city! I hope you enjoy this gallery of Lisbon in ten images!
