Back in 2017 we spent 10 days exploring part of the Italian island of Sicily with our two young kids. We found Sicily to be even more charming and kid-friendly than the other Italian regions we had visited! I never wrote a post about our time in Sicily, so I decided to put together a photo gallery with my favorite ten images.
Where We Went
During our time in Sicily we visited the towns of Syracuse, Caccamo, Cefalu and Palermo. We didn’t visit Taormina because the G8 meeting of world leaders happened at the same time we were supposed to be there.
We only scratched the surface of this historically and culturally rich island, but we fell deeply in love with it. Sicily is a bit different than the rest of Italy. They have their own language (Sicilian), and its cuisine will change your concept of what traditional Italian food is. Being smack in the middle of the Mediterranean, many cultures have shaped the island.
Some of our Sicily highlights included strolling the streets of Syracuse in the evening after a delicious seafood pasta dinner, and wandering around the dilapidated yet artsy streets of Palermo. We loved lounging on the beach at Cefalu from morning to night, and catching glimpses of Mt. Etna while driving from one destination to the next.
There is so much we didn’t explore on the island, like the archeological park in Agrigento and the town of Corleone (any Godfather fans out there?). We didn’t visit the Aeolian Islands because our kids were very little at the time (our daughter was only 8 months then!), and we decided to save those for a future visit.
These are ten of my favorite images of Sicily. Hopefully they will inspire you to cross this idyllic Italian island off your bucket list.
